Our Jiu-Jitsu Classes Are For Everyone
Area 502 is proud to be the Louisville’s only Official Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy.
Our head coach Phillip Perkins is a Carlson Gracie Jr. Blackbelt. He has taught and trained all over the world. He has spent over 2 months in Brazil training and teaching seminars. We are proud to carry on the Carlson Gracie Legacy at Area 502.Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the style of Legendary Grandmaster Carlson Gracie Senior is one of only four distinct styles.
Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is considered more aggressive and offensive in nature, and better suited for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition. Carlson Gracie made his name as a fighter in the era of Vale Tudo, and is considered the best Vale Tudo fighter of the ’50s and ’60s. His hyper aggressive style of jiu jitsu had a deep influence on the art and his students. Carlson’s school flew in the face of Helio Gracie’s tradition of reserving advanced techniques for members and teaching only basic self-defense to all others. Carlson taught his students everything he knew in the name of advancing the art.

Great traing and good ppl. Would recommend it to anyone!!Posted on Robert WittenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I went to the grand opening of the new location on Breckenridge Ln because I know a guy who used to train there and he spoke highly of it. Its a great facility and there are a lot of students there. They offer a free class, so with some misgivings (I'm an older guy, in my late 50s) I showed up for the class for "Fundamentals of Muay Thai". I was pretty clumsy, but some of the other students there gave me some help with hand positioning and things. There ARE some guys there who ARE ABOUT IT, for sure! I'm used to going to bodybuilding types of gyms, where you do a set and maybe let your mind wander. Thats not how things are done here, lol! You have to keep focus. And when the Muay Thai Teacher had us all punch the punching bags with the combination that we learned that day, I was hooked! All kinds of people in that room, and we were bringing the fire! There is an energy in this place thats hard to describe. But if you are thinking about looking into it, I hope that you do, because, oh man! GOOD TIMES! I'm still new at this, but I signed up and I intend to keep trying to learn it and practice. The teachers are awesome and SO ARE THE STUDENTS. I didn't think that groups of people like this existed anymore. I'm so glad that I was wrong. And don't be afraid of stepping outside of your comfort zone and learning something new and striving to progress. And this gym here is the place to do it. Boxing, BJJ, wrestling, and my own choice, Muay Thai Boxing! And, oh, the weight room facilities that they have there are more than adequate - better than most silver era weight rooms would have. Benches, cables, fly station, GHR, captain's chair, hack squat, and more. There's even turf there.Posted on Devin GossumTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Best Martial Arts gym in the Louisville area. Amazing coaches, the training is real, and the people feel like family. Whether it’s striking, grappling, or conditioning, the training is top notch and tailored to all levels. Couldn’t recommend it more.Posted on The Defective ThobeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The gym feels like a family. I have been training there for about 5 months and everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. It's also 100% the best gym in the region to get good at combat sports! -Sam

What is Jiu-Jitsu?
Jiu-Jitsu, often referred to as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Its roots can be traced back to Japanese Judo and traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, but it was further developed and popularized in Brazil. The core principle of Jiu-Jitsu is to enable a smaller or weaker individual to defend against and, using proper techniques, overcome a larger and stronger opponent.
This is achieved primarily through the use of leverage, body positioning, and submission holds such as joint locks and chokeholds. Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes taking an opponent to the ground and employing ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds. The strategy is to control and overpower the opponent, leading them to a submission.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. It is known for its effectiveness in real combat situations, which has made it a cornerstone of MMA. Beyond its combat effectiveness, Jiu-Jitsu is also regarded as a way to promote physical fitness and build character in young people, fostering principles such as respect, discipline, and perseverance.
